NAVIGATING DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS

We estimate that the average manager will spend more than nineteen thousand hours of their working life having difficult conversations. That number is much larger for business owners.

Invest nine learning how to have them well.

Following in the intrepid footsteps of my forebears, Charles and Jane Quin, who first settled in Normanby, about ninety-minutes north of Hawera by horse-drawn carriage, in 𝟭𝟴𝟳𝟴, I'm heading to Taranaki.

𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘦: 𝟭𝟳 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲.
𝘝𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘦: 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗙𝗢𝗟𝗗, 𝟰𝟵 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁, 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗣𝗹𝘆𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵.

The workshop draws on almost three decades of lived experience and first-hand observations from working with and within organisations of every size, from start-ups to multi-nationals, in both private and public sectors.

It provides you with proven and practical tools built on ideas and insights from experts in psychology, human communication, leadership, negotiations, and neurodiversity, built for the New Zealand context.

Not an academic lecture. This is a highly interactive day of learning with, and often from, others who aspire to approach consequential and contentious issues with confidence, reach agreements that lead to action, and do so in a way protects or strengthens the relationships that matter.

Avoiding or fumbling difficult conversations is not a character flaw, it is simply a skill gap, and like any other skill, it can be learned.

You will leave with a completed plan for your next difficult conversation, and a blueprint for every difficult conversation thereafter.

More than a workshop.

We meet with all participants one-to-one ahead of the workshop so that we understand your individual learning objectives, and to ensure that you know what to expect from the day.

Research tells us that if you don't apply what you learn in the real-world within three-weeks of the workshop, it's likely that you never will. What really matters to us is that you see lasting and positive change, so we also offer an additional one-to-one session to help you prepare for a real conversation. This follow up session is optional, encouraged, and comes at no additional cost to you.

Learn the skills and build the confidence to resolve important issues regardless of how contentious, calmly and competently without harming relationships.

Negotiations, strategy setting, planning and prioritisation, people leadership, client engagements, conflict resolution - these are some examples of the many difficult conversations you encounter in your daily life.

These conversations happen in all directions: between founders, with shareholders, boards, staff, peers, managers, within and across teams, internally and externally.

Because every conversation involves at least one other human, it is loaded with the unpredictability our brains have evolved to protect us from.

We address the root cause of organisational friction, from within the boardroom, around the water cooler, and out to the external relationships we depend on: mistaking our discomfort for evidence we're doing something wrong rather than something important.

Here's what past attendees have told us

Richard is a knowledgeable facilitator who shares his expertise in a clear, engaging, and logical manner. I left the workshop with valuable new insights, practical tools I can apply immediately, and a renewed sense of confidence in handling challenging conversations.

You have a great way of delivering a message/ content that has a real potential to go 'sideways' at any stage! This takes courage and guts - good on you! You obviously live what you preach!

Amazing content & structure. The exercises are amazing too.

I found the pace of the training and the style very engaging.

I got a lot more from the day than I anticipated. I feel more equipped to address challenging situations and conversations than I did previously.

Great to have some tools and language back in my toolkit. One thing I've learnt: avoiding a difficult conversation is a choice, and it has consequences. But planned and framed well, these conversations can lead to outcomes that are genuinely life-changing.
