Strategy Design
"Often a company’s strategy has little or nothing to do with what its strategic planning document says, which is typically full of platitudinous statements, flowery prose, and mind-numbing charts and graphs..."
- Roger L Martin
You do want to win, right?
Winning means different things to different people.
Whether you're in business, public service, or not-for-profit - you exist to achieve something.
And you are all in a competition - it may be with other businesses, it might be for government funding, it could be with competing ideologies, or simply apathy; 'do nothing' is a compelling competitor (as most of you who read this will shortly demonstrate).
Whatever it is, defining what winning means and communicating the strategy that will get you there, in plain language, gives your people the clarity needed to keep you all focussed on what matters most.
Analyse this
A winning strategy will not be found in spreadsheets or analysis of historical data alone (unless you're designing a strategy that will win last year).
We flatly reject the notion of an unchanging world because, well, facts. So we approach strategy design as a mix of imagination, creativity, research, analysis, intuition (yours), and logic.
It can be quite a ride - challenging, uncomfortable, exhilarating, and worth every minute.

Cut the crap
You don't need more corporate waffle so you won't get any from us (we can throw some in later if you insist, and we won't even charge you for it).
All killer - no filler: Just strategy your people will understand and use in their day to day decision making.

Strategy design is in part a creative process. We use the Playing to Win framework from Playing to Win by Lafley & Martin (2013) because it works. But you don't need to worry about that unless you prefer to DIY, in which case you can buy the book here.

This image, based on a true story, depicts the sort of bullshit strategy theatre that really boils our blood and gives strategy a bad name - and it's why we're on a mission to cut the crap.
